Yesterday in Lagos, a significant milestone was reached with the official launch of Databanc, a cutting-edge platform developed through a collaboration between Sterling Bank and the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN). This platform is designed to register small businesses across the country, assign them unique identifiers, and provide access to essential resources that can support their growth, including critical financing opportunities.

Databanc is a game-changer for Nigeria’s small and medium enterprises (SMEs), aligning directly with SMEDAN’s broader goal of deepening its understanding of the SME sector by collecting accurate and comprehensive data. By fostering the formalization of businesses, Databanc also creates a pathway for SMEs to integrate into Nigeria’s formal economy, which opens the door to more opportunities, such as credit and government support initiatives.

One of the standout features of Databanc is its ability to enhance the success rate of SMEs applying for the SMEDAN-Sterling 5 billion naira loan program, which offers single-digit interest rates to qualifying businesses. SMEs often struggle to secure financing due to a lack of proper documentation or a clear demonstration of their creditworthiness. Databanc helps bridge this gap by enabling businesses to gather and present the necessary paperwork, demonstrating their potential for growth and sustainability.

So far, the program has shown remarkable success. Nearly 200 million naira has already been disbursed to applicants who have met the necessary criteria, paving the way for more SMEs to receive much-needed financial support. This funding is designed to help them scale their operations, expand their reach, and contribute to Nigeria’s overall economic development.

Moving forward, SMEDAN remains committed to providing continuous support to SMEs, ensuring they fully benefit from the resources available through Databanc and other similar initiatives. This collaboration with Sterling Bank exemplifies SMEDAN’s ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s SME sector and provide the tools businesses need to thrive in an increasingly competitive marketplace.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to visit the office of CAC Registrar General Hussaini Ishaq Magaji, SAN. Our discussions were centered on aligning strategies to streamline and simplify the registration process for small businesses. The key objective was to create a more efficient regulatory framework, essential for fostering an enabling environment where small and medium enterprises (SMEs) can thrive. By removing bureaucratic hurdles and making the registration process more accessible, we aim to empower entrepreneurs, making it easier for them to formalize their businesses and access the various benefits of being part of the formal economy. This initiative is a crucial step towards enhancing the ease of doing business in Nigeria, which will ultimately lead to the growth and sustainability of our local enterprises.

In the afternoon, I participated in a live discussion on CNBC Africa Power Lunch, where I had the opportunity to delve into the positive implications of our collaborative 5 Billion single-digit loan initiative, launched in partnership with Sterling Bank. I extend my heartfelt thanks to Abubakar Suleiman for his unwavering support in this endeavor. The discussion on CNBC Africa focused on how this initiative is poised to significantly impact small businesses across the country. By providing accessible and affordable finance, we are not only facilitating growth but also empowering small businesses to scale their operations. This financial injection is crucial for businesses that have been struggling with capital constraints, as it provides them with the much-needed resources to expand, innovate, and compete effectively in the market.

Later in the day, while in Lagos, I had the honor of representing the Hon. Minister Doris Uzoka-Anite at the 18th Nigeria-British Chamber of Commerce (NBCC) President’s inauguration dinner. This event provided a platform to engage with key stakeholders in the business community and discuss strategies to support SMEs. During the dinner, I unveiled the NBCC MSME Ideation, an initiative designed to bridge the digital divide for SMEs. This initiative focuses on facilitating operational improvements, expanding market reach, and ensuring sustained competitiveness within the rapidly evolving business landscape. By equipping SMEs with the necessary digital tools and knowledge, we are enabling them to navigate the challenges of the modern market and secure their place in the global economy. The NBCC MSME Ideation is a testament to our commitment to supporting small businesses and ensuring they have the resources they need to succeed.

I’m thrilled to announce a landmark development in our ongoing commitment to empowering Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across the nation. We have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Abubakar Suleiman, the Managing Director of Sterling Bank, securing a substantial 5 Billion Naira loan at a remarkably low single-digit interest rate. This partnership is designed specifically to fuel the growth and prosperity of small businesses throughout Nigeria.

This new initiative offers MSMEs access to loans ranging from 250,000 to 2,500,000 Naira. By providing these financial resources at a single-digit interest rate, we are removing significant barriers that often hinder the growth and development of small businesses. This move is set to pave the way for broader economic success, fostering an environment where entrepreneurs can thrive, innovate, and contribute to the national economy.

The loan facility is a vital step in our mission to support businesses by delivering viable financing options that are crucial for their expansion and success. By partnering with Sterling Bank, we are ensuring that MSMEs have the financial tools they need to overcome challenges, scale their operations, and achieve their business goals.

We are excited about the potential impact of this collaboration and look forward to seeing the positive changes it will bring to businesses across the country. Applications for these loans are now open on our website, making it easier than ever for eligible businesses to access the funding they need.

We encourage all interested entrepreneurs and small business owners to visit our website for more details and to apply for a loan. This opportunity represents a significant boost to our ongoing efforts to support and sustain the growth of MSMEs, and we are eager to see the transformative effects it will have on our business community.

Stay tuned for more updates and join us in celebrating this exciting new chapter in our journey to support Nigeria’s vibrant small business sector.

Today, while speaking on a panel at the NESG Summit, I had the opportunity to share our agency’s forward-looking plans to significantly enhance support for small businesses across Nigeria. These plans are rooted in a deep commitment to fostering growth and sustainability within the small business subsector, which plays a critical role in the nation’s economy.

One of the key initiatives we’re launching is a comprehensive small business census. This census will serve as a vital tool in updating our knowledge and understanding of the small business landscape, allowing us to make more informed, data-driven decisions. Accurate data is essential for tailoring our support to the unique needs of small businesses and ensuring that our interventions are effective and impactful.

Our agency is committed to driving this initiative forward, and I’m pleased to report that we’ve already seen positive developments. For instance, I’ve had productive meetings today with the CEOs of Union Bank and Sterling Bank. These discussions focused on exploring ways to provide more affordable and accessible financial support to SMEs. Both institutions have shown a strong willingness to collaborate with us on this front, and I am optimistic about the potential outcomes.

In addition to financial support, we’re also placing a strong emphasis on training and upskilling. I’m excited to share that we are currently in discussions with Google to create opportunities for young Nigerians to acquire the skills they need to thrive in today’s competitive business environment. By partnering with a tech giant like Google, we aim to bridge the skills gap and empower the next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders.

Our agency’s plans are ambitious, but they are backed by a clear vision and a solid strategy. The discussions at the NESG Summit have only reinforced my belief that, with the right partnerships and a focus on actionable data, we can make a significant impact on the small business ecosystem in Nigeria. The road ahead is challenging, but I am confident that by working together with our partners, we can create a more supportive and enabling environment for small businesses to flourish.
