Today, while speaking on a panel at the NESG Summit, I had the opportunity to share our agency’s forward-looking plans to significantly enhance support for small businesses across Nigeria. These plans are rooted in a deep commitment to fostering growth and sustainability within the small business subsector, which plays a critical role in the nation’s economy.

One of the key initiatives we’re launching is a comprehensive small business census. This census will serve as a vital tool in updating our knowledge and understanding of the small business landscape, allowing us to make more informed, data-driven decisions. Accurate data is essential for tailoring our support to the unique needs of small businesses and ensuring that our interventions are effective and impactful.

Our agency is committed to driving this initiative forward, and I’m pleased to report that we’ve already seen positive developments. For instance, I’ve had productive meetings today with the CEOs of Union Bank and Sterling Bank. These discussions focused on exploring ways to provide more affordable and accessible financial support to SMEs. Both institutions have shown a strong willingness to collaborate with us on this front, and I am optimistic about the potential outcomes.

In addition to financial support, we’re also placing a strong emphasis on training and upskilling. I’m excited to share that we are currently in discussions with Google to create opportunities for young Nigerians to acquire the skills they need to thrive in today’s competitive business environment. By partnering with a tech giant like Google, we aim to bridge the skills gap and empower the next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders.

Our agency’s plans are ambitious, but they are backed by a clear vision and a solid strategy. The discussions at the NESG Summit have only reinforced my belief that, with the right partnerships and a focus on actionable data, we can make a significant impact on the small business ecosystem in Nigeria. The road ahead is challenging, but I am confident that by working together with our partners, we can create a more supportive and enabling environment for small businesses to flourish.
