Yesterday, I had the pleasure of visiting the historic Cane Village in Mende, Maryland, Lagos State, where I met with small business owners and artisans who have dedicated decades of their lives to their craft. These talented individuals specialize in transforming cane into exquisite furniture and household items. This craftsmanship is not just a trade but a legacy, with skills often passed down from one generation to the next. As I spoke with them, I could sense the deep pride they have in their work and the essential role it plays in sustaining their families and uplifting their community.

However, the artisans shared some of the significant challenges they currently face, which threaten their livelihood and the continued success of this craft. Three major concerns stood out in our discussions:

  1. Low patronage due to ongoing road construction: Access to the village has been severely hindered by the extensive roadwork taking place in the area. This disruption has resulted in a decline in customers, making it harder for the artisans to maintain steady sales and keep their businesses thriving.
  2. Rising costs of raw materials: The increasing cost of cane and other necessary supplies has made it difficult for the artisans to keep up with production without raising prices, which could further affect their already dwindling customer base.
  3. Need for an enabling work environment and government support: Many artisans expressed the desire for better infrastructure, facilities, and more robust government backing. They hope for programs that could provide financial aid, affordable access to raw materials, and initiatives to boost awareness of their craft and attract more customers.

This invaluable craft sustains not only the artisans and their businesses but also plays a crucial role in the economic and social fabric of the community. It empowers them to send their children to school, create employment opportunities, and pass down cultural heritage. At SMEDAN, we recognize the importance of supporting such communities, and we remain committed to enhancing livelihoods, providing the necessary resources, and fostering the growth of small and medium enterprises across Nigeria to drive our nation’s economic growth forward.
