Yesterday, I had the privilege of meeting with several distinguished leaders to forge strategic partnerships aimed at empowering small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria. The meeting included the Consul General and Head of Trade of the Kingdom of Denmark, Jette Bjerrum; the Mastercard team, led by the Country Manager and Area Business Head for West Africa, Folashade Femi-Lawal; and the President of the Nigeria-British Chamber of Commerce, Ray Atelly.
Our discussions centered on enhancing the growth of SMEs in crucial sectors, particularly agriculture and services. We explored opportunities for providing seamless market access and inclusive digital solutions to help Nigerian SMEs thrive in an increasingly competitive global landscape. These conversations are particularly timely, given the evolving nature of international trade and the pressing need for innovation and digital transformation within Nigeria’s SME sector.
The Mastercard team brought forward key insights into the role that digital payment systems and financial inclusion can play in boosting SME productivity. Their expertise in creating scalable, secure payment ecosystems aligns with the broader objectives of making business processes smoother and more accessible for small businesses. I’m confident that leveraging Mastercard’s solutions will drive significant change, allowing SMEs to integrate easily into the digital economy, which is crucial for their sustainability and growth.
Additionally, the meeting with the Danish Consul General opened up discussions on international trade opportunities for Nigerian SMEs, particularly in the agricultural sector. Denmark, known for its advanced agricultural practices, offers insights that could help Nigerian businesses enhance productivity, reduce waste, and improve sustainability. By fostering trade relations and knowledge exchange, we aim to boost local production and ensure that Nigerian products meet global standards.
The Nigeria-British Chamber of Commerce, with its extensive network and expertise, remains a vital partner in helping SMEs navigate market regulations, secure funding, and gain market acceptance both locally and internationally.
I remain optimistic about the outcomes of these discussions and look forward to meaningful collaboration. Together, we can create sustainable solutions that drive SME growth, boost local production, and create prosperity for all.
