I closed out the week with an invigorating town hall session at the Startup Arewa Innovation Summit 2023, an event centered around the theme, “Building Sustainable Tech Ecosystems: Lessons from the North.” This year’s summit was a remarkable showcase of the commitment to advancing innovation, fostering collaboration, and driving sustainable growth within the region. The focus on building tech ecosystems in Northern Nigeria highlighted the unique opportunities and challenges faced by local startups and SMEs.
The session provided a valuable platform for engagement and dialogue, where I had the opportunity to listen to first-hand comments, suggestions, and experiences shared by various small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in attendance. The diversity of perspectives was both enlightening and motivating, offering a deep dive into the specific needs and aspirations of businesses striving for success in the northern tech landscape.
The discussions were rich with ideas on how to overcome the barriers to innovation and growth, such as access to funding, infrastructure challenges, and the need for more robust support networks. The enthusiasm and creativity exhibited by the participants underscored the potential for substantial impact when these challenges are addressed with targeted, actionable strategies.
As I reflect on the insights gathered from this session, it is clear that there is a strong demand for programs and initiatives that can provide practical solutions and foster a more resilient tech ecosystem. In response to these needs, SMEDAN remains steadfast in its commitment to designing and implementing impactful programs tailored to address these critical issues. We recognize the importance of supporting SMEs through strategic interventions that can drive meaningful change and contribute to the overall growth of the tech sector in Northern Nigeria.
Looking ahead, SMEDAN will continue to prioritize these areas in our strategic planning and program development. Our goal is to enhance the support structures available to entrepreneurs and small businesses, ensuring they have the tools and resources necessary to thrive in an evolving technological landscape. The insights from the Startup Arewa Innovation Summit will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping our approach and reinforcing our dedication to fostering a dynamic and sustainable tech ecosystem in the region.
