Today, I had the opportunity to meet with the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Olukayode Egbetokun, to discuss the critical issue of enhancing security measures that directly impact small businesses across Nigeria. In our discussion, we delved into the challenges that small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) face daily due to the pervasive issue of insecurity. These businesses, which form the backbone of our nation’s economy, are frequently forced to cease operations at an alarming rate due to the growing threats posed by criminal activities. This situation has become a significant concern for us all, as the continuous disruption of these businesses not only hinders economic growth but also affects the livelihoods of millions of Nigerians who depend on these enterprises for their income and sustenance.

The dialogue with IGP Egbetokun was both insightful and productive. We outlined several strategic plans aimed at bolstering security around our 23 industrial development centers, which are vital hubs of economic activity. These centers are instrumental in driving industrialization and providing employment opportunities for our youth. Therefore, ensuring their safety is paramount to maintaining the momentum of industrial growth and sustaining the economic benefits they bring to our communities.

Furthermore, we also focused on developing security strategies that will specifically protect youth-owned businesses. The entrepreneurial spirit of our young people is a key driver of innovation and economic diversification in Nigeria. However, the rising tide of insecurity has left many of these young entrepreneurs vulnerable, with some being forced to abandon their ventures altogether. By implementing targeted security measures, we aim to create a safer environment that encourages the growth and sustainability of these youth-led enterprises, thereby contributing to the overall economic resilience of our nation.

This meeting with the IGP underscores our commitment to ensuring that the security concerns of small businesses and industrial centers are addressed comprehensively. The collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the business community is essential in creating an environment where MSMEs can thrive without the constant fear of security threats. As we move forward, these strategic security plans will be put into action to safeguard our industrial development centers and youth-owned businesses, reinforcing our dedication to the economic empowerment and security of all Nigerians.
